Andy's ride home from California

5/24—6/8/24

I took three days to ride the 1,761 miles home from Thousand Oaks, California to Houston, Texas.

Left John's before 5:00am and bombed through northern Los Angeles. Speed limit was 55 or 65 but, like everyone else, I just put the bike in cruise at 80 and took advantage of the HOV lane. Stayed cool in the 60s with light mist until I was near Palm Springs on I-10 and the sun came out. Enjoyed riding AZ 89 over into Prescott, AZ to stay with Jim. We decided my tires would get me home, so we did not change them.

446 miles in 7:45 hours.

On the second day, I Ieft Jim's just before 6:00am. Boring ride on the slab down to Phoenix, through Tucson, across New Mexico to El Paso, Texas and then to to Van Horn. Turned south on I-90 for a selfie at the Prada Marfa Store outside Valentine. Through Marfa to stay in Alpine, Texas for the night. Saw a maximum temperature of 113 degF though El Paso.

763 miles in 10:19 hours.

On the third day, I left the motel in Alpine at 5:30am. Great sunrise on US 90 east of Marathon. Was surprised by a herd of Elk on the road just west of Sanderson!

I think US 90 from Alpine to Del Rio is the loneliest road in the US.

Rode I-10 from San Antonio to home in Houston. Very hot and humid!
